Subject: Demand for Ethics Committee Investigation — Conflict of Interest on the Stop Insider Trading Act
Dear Senators,
September, 2026, the Senate voted down the Stop Insider Trading Act on a party-line 53-to-47 vote. Members of Congress who hold stocks in the very industries they regulate should not be voting on legislation that affects those holdings. That is a conflict of interest, plain and simple.
The STOCK Act already bans insider trading by members of Congress, and it empowers the Senate Ethics Committee to investigate violations. I am formally requesting that the Committee open a full investigation into the senators who voted against this ban while holding regulated-industry stocks.
The law sits above Congress. The Supreme Court ruled in Gravel v. United States that the Speech or Debate Clause does not shield members from criminal prosecution for things like bribery or insider trading. That is how Jim Traficant was convicted and expelled in 2002.
If an investigation proves a senator traded n did this then they broke the public’s trust n are fired immediately
The people of South Carolina are watching. Restore trust by acting now.
Sincerely, Melissa Constituent in Prosperity, S.C.
