Syria had been under crippling economic sanctions for over 40 years due to its designation as a state sponsor of terrorism. However, President Trump has embraced Syria's new leader, a former al-Qaeda jihadist, and unilaterally lifted those sanctions without consulting Congress. This extraordinary move legitimizes an extremist regime and undermines America's long-standing opposition to state sponsors of terrorism. I urge you to publicly censure the President and reassert Congressional oversight over such consequential foreign policy decisions that impact our national security. His reckless overtures to this former terrorist threaten to destabilize the region and embolden our adversaries. As a co-equal branch of government, Congress must take a stand against the President's alarming embrace of Syria under its new hardline leadership.
