US Policy on the Middle East endangers Democrats’ chance to win in November!

To: V.P. Harris

From: A verified voter in Verona, WI

October 5, 2024

I am writing to express my concerns as a voter. I am a dedicated supporter of the Democratic Party, and I plan to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming election. However, I am deeply worried about the ongoing conflict in Gaza and Lebanon, and I believe this issue will significantly affect the outcome of the election. Without immediate action toward a ceasefire, I fear that Kamala Harris and the Democratic ticket could lose critical support in critical swing states. In the 2024 Democratic primary, over 48,000 voters in Wisconsin cast ballots for “uninstructed delegates” to send a message to the Biden administration. This mirrored movements in other battleground states, such as Michigan, where over 100,000 voters chose the "uncommitted" option in protest of the U.S. foreign policy on Gaza. It’s worth noting that the number of uncommitted voters in Michigan is close to the 154,000-vote margin by which Biden won the state in 2020, representing around 13% of the Democratic primary vote. Similarly, in Pennsylvania, the "Uncommitted PA" movement aims to secure 40,000 votes—potentially more than half of the margin Biden won by in 2020.   Both issues—escalating conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon—are significant risks to Kamala Harris's electoral chances. With the race between Trump and Harris likely mirroring the 2020 contest, it’s critical to acknowledge that voters are unlikely to show increased enthusiasm for Harris in 2024, given that the threats posed by Trump have not changed.   The threat of a second Trump presidency risks not being enough to drive voter engagement if the Democratic Party continues to disregard the need for a peaceful resolution in the Middle East. In fact, voter turnout could be even lower, as many feel disillusioned by the Biden Administration’s role in the current state of global affairs.   I urge the White House and Democratic leadership to heed the concerns of these voters. The prospect of losing the 2024 election, not because of Donald Trump’s appeal, but because of the Democrat's handling of these international crises, is real and growing. Kamala Harris’s chances of winning these swing states —and potentially the White House — will depend on decisive action for peace in the Middle East.   I hope the White House will act swiftly and decisively to ensure that voters have a reason to remain engaged and supportive of the Democratic ticket in November.
