Enact Comprehensive Gun Safety Laws to Protect Lives
To: Gov. Abbott

February 15, 2024
The current state of gun laws in Texas is concerning. Despite numerous tragic shootings, foundational gun safety measures have not been implemented. Instead, protections have been removed, allowing guns on college campuses and in K-12 schools, and eliminating the need for a permit to carry a concealed handgun in public. Texas ranks 32nd in the country for gun law strength, with a gun violence rate of 15.7 deaths per 100,000 residents. It is crucial to address this issue by enacting comprehensive gun safety laws, including stricter background checks, regulations on assault weapons, and measures against ghost guns. This is not just about improving rankings, but about safeguarding lives and creating a safer environment for all.
