Assault Weapon Permit Requirement for Community Safety in Alabama

To: Sen. Singleton, Gov. Ivey, Rep. Lamb

From: A constituent in Tuscaloosa, AL

August 22

Crimes involving assault weapons have been steadily increasing across Alabama, posing a threat to public safety in our communities. A permit requirement for carrying these weapons is a reasonable step to improve safety and accountability. While opposition is expected due to political divides, this narrowly-focused measure deserves consideration as an initial effort to address a concerning trend. The intent is not to infringe on rights but to mitigate risks by promoting responsible gun ownership through a permitting process. Prioritizing public welfare should be a shared goal that transcends partisan lines. I urge lawmakers to approach this issue objectively and support measures that can make our streets safer for all Alabamians.
