Deficit Spending and Executive Branch Overreach
To: Sen. Wicker, Rep. Ezell, Sen. Hyde-Smith
From: A verified voter in Bay Saint Louis, MS
June 10
I am writing as a concerned citizen of Mississippi alarmed by the unprecedented overreach and fiscal recklessness embodied in the so-called “Big Beautiful Bill.” The measure represents a profound and deliberate attempt to undermine democratic norms, centralize federal power under partisan control, and dangerously inflate the national deficit by nearly $3 trillion—all while deepening income inequality and slashing services critical to working families. According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office and the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, this legislation would extend tax breaks for corporations and the wealthy while gutting healthcare access for over 13 million Americans and cutting nearly $300 billion from nutrition programs that serve the poor. This is not fiscal conservatism. It is a cynical redistribution of public resources upward at the expense of the most vulnerable Americans. Equally disturbing is the domestic deployment of masked federal agents without warrants in Los Angeles. Immigration raids carried out without judicial oversight, the denial of access to legal counsel, and the violent suppression of peaceful protest through riot control tactics have no place in a free society. The apparent embedding of media figures for propaganda purposes and the unlawful federalization of the California National Guard—against the explicit objections of the governor and without logistical planning—further underscores the authoritarian nature of this administration’s actions. Such conduct does not reflect the rule of law or democratic governance. It reflects the spectacle and intimidation strategy of a regime trying to consolidate power through fear, misinformation, and militarization of civil society. That members of Congress were denied access to inspect detention facilities—an essential function of legislative oversight—is further proof of this administration’s contempt for constitutional checks and balances. The invocation of military assets to police American streets and the scapegoating of immigrants in a time of economic instability is a dangerous precedent that evokes some of the darkest chapters in history. I urge you, Senator, to publicly reject this bill and speak out against these extrajudicial acts of force. The citizens of this country, including those of us in Mississippi, deserve representatives who defend the Constitution, not those who stand silently as it is dismantled.
