Explain the Hypocrisy on Mail-In Ballots and Protect Americans’ Voting Rights

To: Rep. Carter, Sen. Cruz, Sen. Cornyn

From: A constituent in Leander, TX

March 28

I am writing to demand a clear and honest explanation: why are efforts underway to restrict or eliminate mail-in voting when even the President of the United States, Donald Trump, has openly admitted to using a mail-in ballot himself? In a recent exchange with Liz Landers of PBS, the President confirmed that he voted by mail. When pressed, he attempted to justify his choice by citing exceptions—being away, military service, business travel, illness, or disability. Yet none of those conditions applied. He was physically present in Palm Beach and had ample opportunity to vote in person. This is not a minor inconsistency. It is blatant hypocrisy. You cannot simultaneously argue that mail-in voting is insecure, unreliable, or unfit for the American public while using it for personal convenience at the highest level of government. If mail-in ballots are acceptable for the President, they are acceptable for every American citizen. Millions of voters rely on mail-in ballots: seniors, working families, people with disabilities, rural voters, and those balancing multiple jobs or caregiving responsibilities. Efforts to restrict this method of voting are not about security—they are about limiting access. Congress has a responsibility to protect, not undermine, the fundamental right to vote. If there are concerns about election integrity, address them with evidence-based solutions—not selective outrage and political double standards. I urge you to: • Reject any legislation that restricts lawful access to mail-in voting • Publicly address and reconcile this glaring hypocrisy • Focus on expanding access to the ballot, not limiting it The American people are paying attention. We expect consistency, integrity, and a commitment to equal access under the law—not rules that apply differently depending on who you are. Explain this contradiction. Defend your position. And most importantly, protect the right of every American to vote.
