I am reading where just a few days ago the Texas Legislature voted out a bill to allow so-called education savings accounts in the state. However, these function more like grants than personal savings accounts. That’s right, the state government itself will fund these ‘accounts’ using taxpayer dollars for what is known as school vouchers. It is an outrage to use public funds for private education.
Meanwhile the governor has announced a proposal to cut some $10B in local property taxes. Well you can’t have one without the other. It is impossible to fund ‘school vouchers’ and ‘tax cuts’ simultaneously without causing serious budget deficits.
This is not what Texans voted for this last election. We want serious and steady leadership that works for all citizens, residents and visitors. Please understand, when I talk with friends & neighbors there is no talk of wanting taxpayers to fund private schools for their children. That’s right, not one single friend or neighbor has stated they want the public to fund these expensive private institutions - many of which are non-secular or out-right religious. Some even espouse controversial beliefs and dogma which are contrary to good public policy.
With all due respect, I am encouraging you to please reject and oppose these programs. Please use the full power and voice of your office to speak out against these ideas and pressure colleagues in the legislature to vote ‘no’ should this come to a vote in committee or reach the floor.
Thank you for all you do for Texans and I do sincerely look forward to your response and good day.
