Support with amendment for SLS 40-Hour Workweek (RN 26 11444)

To: Asm. Haney, Gov. Newsom, Sen. Wiener

From: A constituent in San Francisco, CA

April 27

Subject: Support with amendment for SLS 40-Hour Workweek (RN 26 11444) – May 7 Hearing I work as a Direct Support Professional in Supported Living Services (SLS) in California. I am writing in support of the SLS 40-hour workweek proposal and to respectfully request the inclusion of the following amendment: (b) Nothing in this section shall be construed to alter the personal attendant exceptions granted to workers who provide Supported Living Services as defined in subdivision (a) under California’s Industrial Welfare Commission Wage Order No. 15. I want to start by saying thank you. The work being done by the Department of Developmental Services, in partnership with the Department of Finance, to strengthen overtime protections for our workforce is meaningful and important. It shows that California values the people who do this work every day. At the same time, this amendment is critical to the work we do. As a Direct Support Professional, my job is not just about hours on a schedule—it’s about supporting real people in their homes, their routines, and their lives. The ability to stay with the person I support, without interruption, is what creates stability, trust, and safety. This amendment helps protect that continuity of care. Many of us work across both SLS and IHSS, sometimes even in the same home. Keeping these systems aligned helps avoid confusion and ensures we can focus on what matters most—the person we support. Without this clarification, there is a risk of inconsistent rules that could disrupt care and make it harder for us to do our jobs effectively. This amendment does not change the intent of the proposal—it simply ensures the system works the way it needs to for both the workforce and the individuals we serve. I respectfully ask for your support in including this amendment. Thank you for your time and for your commitment to individuals with developmental disabilities and the workforce that supports them. Sincerely,
