Defend citizen privacy from insecure surveillance cameras

To: Rep. Salinas, Sen. Wyden, Sen. Merkley

From: A constituent in Beaverton, OR

June 19

The unsecured cameras highlighted in this report pose a severe threat to personal privacy and security. With over 40,000 cameras exposing footage from private residences, businesses, medical facilities, and public spaces, malicious actors can easily invade the privacy of countless individuals. This undermines our fundamental right to privacy and leaves people vulnerable to harassment, stalking, theft, and other crimes. We urgently need stronger regulations and enforcement mechanisms to protect citizen privacy from negligent camera manufacturers and operators. Manufacturers must be required to implement robust security measures, including secure default settings and automatic software updates to patch vulnerabilities. Camera operators should face stiff penalties for failing to properly secure their systems. Without decisive action to safeguard privacy, we risk normalizing a surveillance state where our every move is monitored and recorded. A society stripped of privacy cannot be truly free or safe. I urge you to take concrete steps to enhance privacy protections and hold companies accountable for endangering the public through insecure camera systems. The right to privacy must be vigorously defended.
