Presidential war powers
To: Rep. Thanedar
From: A constituent in Allen Park, MI
March 1
I am writing as a constituent from Taylor, Michigan, to express my profound outrage and deep concern over the ongoing U.S. military strikes against Iran, now underway as part of Operation Epic Fury. These actions, launched without prior congressional authorization or a declaration of war, have plunged our nation into what appears to be a major conflict in the Middle East—one that risks American lives, escalates regional instability, and could lead to a prolonged and costly war. President Trump announced these joint U.S.-Israeli bombings today, targeting Iranian military sites, command centers, missile facilities, and other infrastructure across cities like Tehran, with vows of continued “heavy and pinpoint bombing” for as long as necessary. Iran has already retaliated with missiles and drones aimed at U.S. bases and allies in the region. This is an act of war, and the Constitution clearly reserves the power to declare war to Congress—not the executive branch acting unilaterally. As Democratic leaders in Congress, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have a solemn responsibility to uphold congressional oversight, protect our troops from unnecessary danger, and prevent endless foreign entanglements that drain American resources when we face so many challenges at home. Instead, their responses have been inadequate at best. They have called for briefings, transparency, and votes on war powers resolutions—measures that come far too late after the bombs have already fallen. They have acknowledged Iran’s threats but failed to forcefully oppose this unauthorized escalation or demand an immediate halt to the operations. This failure of leadership has contributed to dragging our country into yet another Middle East conflict without the full debate and consent of the people’s representatives. In light of this, I strongly believe that both Leader Schumer and Leader Jeffries should resign from their leadership positions immediately. Their inability (or unwillingness) to assert Congress’s constitutional authority at this critical moment has betrayed the trust of millions of Americans who want peace, fiscal responsibility, and an end to forever wars. I urge you to: • Demand that Congress reconvene immediately to vote on a War Powers Resolution to terminate or limit these military actions. • Publicly call for Leader Schumer and Leader Jeffries to step down if they cannot lead effectively on this issue. • Represent the voices of your constituents by prioritizing diplomacy, de-escalation, and the safety of our service members over unchecked executive warmaking. The American people deserve leaders who put our Constitution and our national interests first—not partisan posturing after the fact. I will be watching closely how you respond to this crisis and will factor it into my future voting decisions. Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. I look forward to your reply.
