I strongly support Rep. Kevin Kiley's bill to prohibit mid-decade redistricting across the country. Allowing congressional maps to be redrawn before each election would severely undermine the integrity of our elections and enable rampant gerrymandering for partisan gain. Redistricting should only occur once every ten years after the census, as intended, to ensure fair representation based on updated population data. Gov. Newsom's attempt to dismantle California's nonpartisan Citizens Redistricting Commission and redraw maps for the 2026 midterms is a brazen power grab that would disenfranchise millions of voters. As Kiley stated, Newsom aims to reduce Republican seats from over 40% of the statewide vote to just 6% of the delegation - an egregious act of corruption that must be stopped. Even non-partisan groups like Common Cause recognize how dangerous Newsom's scheme is for democracy. Both parties should be held to the same redistricting standards and timelines to prevent an all-out partisan war over maps. Kiley's bill would enforce that principle nationwide, protecting voters' voices and the credibility of our elections. I urge you to cosponsor this critical legislation.
