Oppose Legislation Banning Federal Funding for Transgender Healthcare
To: Gov. Newsom
From: A constituent in San Juan Capistrano, CA
September 30, 2025
I am writing to express my deep concern over the proposed legislation that threatens to ban federal funding for transgender healthcare. This bill, which has caused a standstill in Congress, would have devastating consequences for the transgender community, including both adults and youth.
The proposed legislation goes beyond just cutting funding. It aims to prohibit transgender surgeries, strip Medicaid coverage from transgender individuals, and even ban Pride flags from public buildings. These measures are not just discriminatory; they are a direct attack on the rights and well-being of transgender Americans.
The impact of such legislation is already being felt. Some hospitals have stopped providing gender-affirming care for LGBTQ+ youth due to threats from the current administration. This is not just a matter of policy; it's a matter of life and death for many individuals who rely on these essential medical services.
I urge you to stand firm against any attempts to use government shutdowns or other political maneuvers to force through this harmful legislation. Transgender Americans have the right to access necessary healthcare, including gender-affirming care, which is recognized by major medical associations as medically necessary and often life-saving.
Senator Schumer has expressed hope that a shutdown can be avoided through serious negotiations. I implore you to be part of those negotiations and to advocate for the protection of transgender rights and healthcare access. The federal government should not be in the business of discriminating against its citizens or denying them access to medical care.
Please oppose any legislation that seeks to ban federal funding for transgender healthcare or restrict access to gender-affirming care. Instead, I ask that you support policies that protect and affirm the rights of all Americans, regardless of their gender identity. The health, dignity, and equality of transgender individuals depend on your commitment to these principles.
