I am writing to express my outrage at House Republicans' vote against releasing Department of Homeland Security records related to the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good by an ICE agent on January 7, 2026. This obstruction of transparency is unacceptable when an unarmed American citizen has been killed by federal agents.
Renee Nicole Good was a 37-year-old U.S. citizen and mother of three children. Video footage shows ICE agents cursing at her while she sat in her parked SUV, pulling on her door, and ultimately shooting her as she drove away. Her vehicle then crashed into a utility pole. Despite Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem's claim that Good tried to run over an officer, state and local officials have disputed this characterization. Even President Trump called the shooting "a vicious situation" and "horrible to watch."
The American people deserve to know what happened. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara confirmed that Minneapolis police officers were not on scene when the deadly force occurred, and it remains unclear whether the ICE officer was even wearing a body-worn camera. The FBI forced the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to withdraw from investigating this shooting. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison called this "deeply concerning, extremely disappointing," questioning what federal authorities are "afraid of" regarding an independent investigation.
When House Republicans vote to block the release of DHS records about this shooting, they are choosing to protect federal agents over the life of an American citizen. This is not about politics. This is about basic accountability and transparency in government. No American should be shot by federal agents without a full and transparent investigation.
I demand that you reverse your position and vote to release all DHS records related to this shooting immediately. The American people are watching, and we will remember who stood with transparency and accountability and who chose to hide the truth. Do the right thing.
