The COVID-19 pandemic continues to take a heavy toll, particularly on immunocompromised individuals and those at higher risk. Despite widespread vaccination efforts, we must acknowledge the ongoing risks posed by long COVID and the lack of effective treatments for this debilitating condition. The dismantling of essential tools, such as accessible testing, wastewater tracking, and readily available treatments, is deeply concerning. These measures played a crucial role in mitigating the spread and impact of the virus. As an immunocompromised person, I fear being left behind by the current administration's approach. The lack of robust disease prevention measures in healthcare settings further exacerbates the challenges faced by vulnerable populations in accessing vital medical care. We urgently need to include the use of high-quality respirators in healthcare settings, end the politicization of mask-wearing, provide funding for long COVID research and treatment, increase air filtration standards, and develop sterilizing vaccines. Additionally, we must stop banning mask-wearing, as these are essential accessibility tools for disabled and immunocompromised individuals. We need comprehensive policies that prioritize public health and the well-being of all citizens, particularly those at heightened risk from COVID-19 and its long-term consequences. It is imperative that our leaders recognize the gravity of this situation and take decisive action to reinstate and expand essential pandemic preparedness measures. Protecting the most vulnerable members of our society should be a top priority, and this necessitates a proactive approach to disease prevention, treatment development, and ensuring equitable access to healthcare services. We cannot afford to sideline the ongoing impact of COVID-19, especially on those already grappling with compromised immune systems and heightened susceptibility to severe illness.
