Vote No on Redundant Bill That Only Benefits ICE and Punishes Protesters

To: Sen. McCann

From: A verified voter in Kalamazoo, MI

June 11

Vote no on this bill. It is redundant, unnecessary, and its real purpose is to give ICE a legal tool to crack down on protesters exercising their First Amendment rights. Michigan already has laws on the books that address unlawful interference with emergency response. This legislation adds nothing except new exposure for people who show up to demonstrate peacefully. The ACLU of Michigan has flagged serious constitutional concerns here, and those concerns deserve your attention. When a bill's practical effect is to chill protected speech and assembly while handing federal immigration enforcement a new pretext to target communities, that is not a law Michigan should pass. More on what passed the House: https://www.wemu.org/michigan-news/2026-06-10/michigan-house-adopts-bills-to-punish-interference-with-law-enforcement-emergency-responders. Stand with your constituents and against this overreach. Vote no.
