Support the Sanders-Casar Bill to Ban Superintelligence and Create Federal AI Oversight
To: Sen. Johnson, Sen. Baldwin, Rep. Steil
From: A constituent in Greendale, WI
September 24
Please co-sponsor and vote yes on the Sanders-Casar legislation to ban artificial superintelligence and establish a Department of Artificial Intelligence. This bill would pause the most advanced AI development until federal safety rules are in place and require federal approval before deployment. That's not radical — that's basic due diligence on a technology that researchers at OpenAI and Google DeepMind are calling an existential risk to humanity.
These aren't outside critics. Juan Felipe Cerón Uribe, a researcher in OpenAI's Safety Systems, says "superintelligence could either go extremely right or extremely wrong." A Google DeepMind engineer warns the current path leads to "an existential catastrophe for humanity." When the people building this technology are begging Congress to slow down, we should listen. Congress has done nothing meaningful to regulate AI while the industry races ahead with no guardrails.
The China competition argument doesn't hold. Sanders is right that this ultimately requires international cooperation, the same way Reagan and Gorbachev negotiated nuclear arms control. Letting a dangerous technology race go unchecked isn't strength — it's negligence. Support this bill.
