I am deeply concerned about the proposed Copperwood Mine. This project poses significant risks to our environment, public health and local economy.
The mine would generate toxic waste, including mercury and arsenic, stored in a massive tailings facility on terrain sloping toward Lake Superior. A failure in the tailings dam could send waste rushing into the lake, devastating ecosystems and endangering drinking water. Michigan’s Dam Safety Program is already critically understaffed, increasing the risks.
The project would also destroy 43.48 acres of wetlands and abandon over 16,000 feet of stream channel, disrupting water flow and wildlife habitats. Such damage would harm the pristine natural beauty and ecological integrity of the area.
Economically, this mine threatens Michigan’s $12 billion outdoor recreation industry. The Porcupine Mountains attract visitors who fuel local businesses, but the mine could deter tourism and cause long-term economic instability. Historical data shows that mining projects often result in net economic losses, particularly in regions reliant on sustainable industries like tourism.
I urge you to oppose the Copperwood Mine and prioritize the protection of our natural resources and economy. Thank you for your attention to this critical issue.
