Urgent need to address utility political spending and soaring energy costs

To: Gov. Spanberger, Del. Glass, Sen. Graves

From: A verified voter in Norfolk, VA

October 20

I am writing to you today as a resident of Norfolk to express my deep concern regarding Dominion Energy’s extensive financial involvement in political campaigns within our state, particularly regarding efforts to influence merger approvals and favorable legislation. The primary responsibility of a utility company is to provide reliable energy to the public at a reasonable rate. It is highly inappropriate for a utility provider—especially one that operates as a regulated monopoly—to use funds to influence our state's political processes. Whether directly or indirectly, the burden of these expenditures is ultimately carried by the ratepayers. Everyday Virginians are already struggling with the soaring costs of energy. Seeing a utility company prioritize political spending over consumer affordability is completely unacceptable to me and to many in our community. I strongly urge you to take legislative action to restrict utility companies from using their revenues to finance political campaigns. Furthermore, I ask that you prioritize policies that hold these companies accountable and meaningfully reduce energy costs for families across our state. Thank you for your time, your public service, and your attention to this urgent matter. I look forward to hearing how you plan to address these concerns and protect Virginia rate-payers.
