The Trump presidency displayed deeply concerning authoritarian tendencies that threatened democratic norms and institutions. Representative Al Green courageously called for accountability by impeaching a president who incited racist violence and attempted to overturn legitimate election results. As representatives sworn to uphold the Constitution, censuring Rep. Green for fulfilling this vital duty is unacceptable. I urge vigorous rejection of efforts to punish those who upheld their oath in defiance of Trump's anti-democratic conduct. Defending Rep. Green demonstrates a commitment to protecting our republic from the scourge of illiberalism and the consolidation of power by demagogues willing to subvert the will of the people. Failure to do so tacitly endorses the very fascist behavior that so recently imperiled American democracy.
