The Crisis: Under President Trump, the United States has abandoned the rule of law for a "Liberation Day" regime of illegal tariffs and military brinkmanship. Following the Supreme Court’s February 20th ruling that these tariffs are unconstitutional, the administration has refused to refund $175 billion to the American people. Instead, the President has bypassed Congress to blockade the Strait of Hormuz, causing gasoline prices to surge 21.2% and inflation to triple to 3.3%. ​The Threat to Stability: While 13 U.S. service members have died in a war with Iran, the President abandoned peace negotiations in Islamabad to attend a UFC match. His rhetoric has turned toward dangerous "illiberalism," following the blueprint of Viktor Orbán—who was soundly defeated by the Hungarian people today in a landslide for democracy. In response, the President has engaged in heresy, attacking the Pope and circulating messianic imagery of himself that Marjorie Taylor Greene has labeled an "Antichrist spirit." ​Our Demands: We, the undersigned, demand that Congress immediately: ​Reassert Power of the Purse: Force the immediate refund of the $175 billion in illegal tariffs to lower costs for American families. ​Halt the Blockade: Exercise War Powers authority to end the illegal maritime blockade and prevent a global energy collapse. ​Hold Hearings on Fitness: Investigate the President’s abandonment of diplomatic duties and the use of the military to extract "bribes" and favorable treatment for private businesses. ​The victory of the opposition in Hungary proves that no leader is above the will of the people or the reach of democracy. Congress, do your job. Hold this administration accountable before the blockade begins tomorrow.
