The Justice Department's decision to authorize firing squads and reauthorize pentobarbital for federal executions is barbaric and reflects poorly on our values as a nation. I'm asking you to publicly oppose this policy and work to block its implementation.
Firing squads have never been part of federal execution protocol for good reason. This isn't about justice or deterrence. The administration claims it's standing with victims, but executing people by firing squad doesn't heal trauma or prevent future violence. It simply adds more brutality to an already broken system.
The Biden administration removed pentobarbital after finding significant uncertainty about whether it causes unnecessary pain and suffering. Now the Trump administration dismisses that review and adds an even more violent method. Only three people remain on federal death row after 37 sentences were commuted, yet this administration is seeking death sentences against 44 defendants. This is about ramping up executions, not pursuing justice.
This policy says more about our government than it does about criminals. We should be moving away from state-sanctioned killing, not expanding the methods we use to carry it out. Oppose this cruel expansion of federal execution methods.
