I am writing as your constituent to urge you to assert Article I oversight authority over the Department of Justice and hold leadership accountable for dismantling the fundamental independence of federal law enforcement. The Department of Justice exists to enforce the law impartially, not to serve as a personal legal shield or an instrument of executive retribution. Recent actions and direct statements by Attorney General Todd Blanche erode public trust and subvert the constitutional separation of powers. I urge the House Judiciary Committee to immediately open a formal inquiry into four documented areas of concern: 1. UNLAWFUL PRESIDENTIAL SELF-DEALING IN TAX IMMUNITY: Under Blanche, DOJ structured a legal settlement granting retroactive, blanket IRS audit immunity to the President, his adult sons, and the Trump Organization for every tax return filed before May 2026. A two-tiered system shielding the Chief Executive from tax compliance violates basic principles of equal justice. 2. ABANDONING INSTITUTIONAL INDEPENDENCE: Asked directly on NBC’s Meet the Press on August 16 whether DOJ would act independently of the White House, Blanche responded: "No, I’m not going to pledge that. And no attorney general should ever pledge that." Republican Senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski voted against his confirmation specifically over independence concerns—concerns Blanche has now publicly validated. 3. VIOLATING STATUTORY TRANSPARENCY MANDATES: In federal court filings, Blanche’s own DOJ conceded it is in violation of the Epstein Files Transparency Act after withholding records, including FBI interview notes, and missing statutory deadlines. 4. PURSUING JOURNALISTS' CONFIDENTIAL SOURCES: DOJ has issued grand jury subpoenas to reporters seeking confidential source identities—including subpoenaing phone records of a reporter’s family members—while a federal judge ruled that DOJ’s search of a Washington Post reporter's devices was unlawful. Treating journalists as targets chills first-amendment-protected newsgathering. Equal justice under law is not a partisan issue. When the nation’s chief law enforcement officer publicly refuses to commit to independence from the White House, Congress has a constitutional obligation to intervene. I urge you to support a formal House Judiciary Committee inquiry, demand full transparency from the Department of Justice, and leverage appropriations authority to keep federal law enforcement accountable to the law—not to whoever occupies the White House.
