I am writing as a constituent who is deeply concerned about the recent online commentary attacking Senator Mark Kelly for his reminder to service members that their oath is to the Constitution. His statement was entirely lawful, appropriate, and fully aligned with long standing military ethics. It is alarming to see individuals twisting his words in an effort to inflame political tensions and to suggest he acted with improper motives. Senator Kelly is a decorated Navy captain, a combat tested pilot, and a public servant who has endured extraordinary personal tragedy. He and his wife, Gabby Giffords, have modeled courage and civic responsibility for our country. It is unacceptable for online voices to portray him as a threat to the military or to claim that he is encouraging disorder. These claims are not grounded in fact and risk encouraging hostility and even violence toward a respected American leader. I am asking you to publicly support Senator Kelly’s right and responsibility to affirm constitutional principles. I am also asking you to help put an end to dangerous chatter that misrepresents his words and targets him personally. Our elected officials have the ability and the responsibility to stand up for truth and to discourage rhetoric that harms our public discourse or threatens public servants. Thank you for your service to Alaska and for your attention to this matter. I hope you will speak clearly in support of Senator Kelly and help restore a respectful and fact based conversation.
