Though I and many other neighbors are not listed on this editorial piece, this speaks for us as well. Please step in and stop the Liberty Renewables project from going forward as planned. You can see the full editorial here: https://www.syracuse.com/opinion/2025/12/madison-county-wind-farm-neighbors-feel-betrayed-by-ny-state-guest-opinion.html We are proud of the town of Fenner and how it previously worked cooperatively with ENEL Northeast to site wind turbines responsibly. That project improved roads and lowered taxes while respecting residents and local input. What is happening now is very different. In its aggressive push for renewable energy, New York State has stripped local municipalities of meaningful power and handed it to international energy companies. Liberty Renewables has proposed 24 wind turbines nearly 700 feet tall, with 12 placed in Fenner, including in the middle of a neighborhood of 230 homes and farms. These turbines would be twice the size of existing ones, towering over homes—some less than a quarter mile away. New York is a large state with ample open land. These projects do not need to be forced into the heart of established neighborhoods. One cluster of homes would be surrounded by multiple turbines; another would face a large maintenance facility at the end of a driveway. This is not responsible siting—it is industrialization of residential and farming communities. Serious concerns remain unanswered: impacts on wells and the water table, constant noise and flashing lights, destruction of forests, massive concrete foundations that will remain forever, and interference with emergency services. Madison County has already completed a technical study showing these turbines will interfere with 911 calls. Our town has no fire station to respond to potential turbine or battery storage fires. Hundreds of residents have protested for three years, asking the state to deny this proposal or relocate it to a less populated area. Those voices have been ignored, along with local zoning laws. A clear alternative exists: the former windmill site in Madison, NY, where turbines were recently demolished at the end of their life. That site now sits vacant and is ideal for reuse, allowing renewable energy development without destroying more land or neighborhoods. Please stand with us and stop this project as planned.
