Oppose VPN Bans: Protect Privacy, Safety, and Free Speech
To: Rep. Chu, Sen. Schiff, Sen. Padilla
From: A constituent in Pasadena, CA
November 28
I am writing to express my deep concern about the proposed legislation in Wisconsin and Michigan that aims to restrict Virtual Private Network (VPN) usage. These bills, ostensibly designed to enforce age verification requirements, pose a significant threat to privacy, safety, and freedom of speech for all Americans. VPNs are essential tools used by millions for legitimate purposes. They enable secure remote work, facilitate academic research, and protect journalists working in sensitive environments. By attempting to block VPNs, we risk undermining these critical functions and setting a dangerous precedent for internet censorship. The Electronic Frontier Foundation has rightly pointed out the potential for disastrous consequences if such legislation were to pass. Not only would it infringe on individual privacy rights, but it could also compromise the security of countless users who rely on VPNs to protect their sensitive data from cybercriminals and other malicious actors. Furthermore, the proposed third-party age verification systems raise serious privacy concerns. Requiring users to submit personal information to access online services creates new vulnerabilities and potential for data breaches. This approach is both ineffective and potentially harmful to the very individuals it aims to protect. We must also consider the broader implications for freedom of speech. VPNs allow individuals to access information and express themselves freely, especially in regions with restrictive internet policies. By following the path of VPN restrictions, we risk aligning ourselves with authoritarian practices that suppress open discourse and limit access to information. I urge you to oppose any legislation that seeks to ban or restrict VPN usage. Instead, I ask that you advocate for policies that protect online privacy, promote internet security, and uphold the principles of free speech that are fundamental to our democracy. We need solutions that address legitimate concerns about online safety without compromising the essential tools and freedoms that make the internet a powerful force for good in our society. The stakes are high, and the consequences of misguided legislation in this area could reverberate globally. Let us lead by example in protecting digital rights and internet freedom. I look forward to your support in safeguarding these crucial aspects of our modern digital life.
