I am writing to urge your support for the AI Data Center Moratorium Act and to call for a nationwide pause on the construction of new hyperscale data centers. The rapid, unregulated expansion of data centers to fuel artificial intelligence and crypto mining is inflicting severe damage on our local communities and critical infrastructure. Across the country, we are facing unprecedented threats to our economic, environmental, and climate security:
Skyrocketing Utility Bills: The massive energy demands of data centers are taxing our electrical grids. Instead of absorbing these infrastructure costs, utility companies are passing them directly onto hardworking American families, leading to spiking residential energy bills.
Depletion of Water Supplies: Data centers require millions of gallons of water daily for cooling, threatening local water tables and placing undue strain on municipal sewer and water services.
Unaccountable Subsidies: Tech corporations are building largely unchecked while securing massive tax breaks and subsidies from local and state governments. This starves our communities of vital revenue that could be funding schools, firefighters, and healthcare workers. We cannot allow the headlong rush into unregulated AI development to compromise our nation's resources and the well-being of everyday citizens. A national moratorium will give democracy and regulation a chance to catch up, ensuring that developers—not everyday ratepayers—pay for the grid upgrades and resources they consume.I ask that you stand with the hundreds of organizations nationwide calling for this vital timeout. Please support the AI Data Center Moratorium Act to ensure that Big Tech's expansion does not come at the expense of our families and our environment.I look forward to hearing your stance on this critical issue.
