Petition: Support a Complete National Firearms Data System We, the undersigned American citizens, believe that good policy must be built on good data. For too long, federal funding limits and fragmented state reporting have left us with incomplete information about gun deaths, non-fatal shootings, circumstances, storage practices, and the real-world effects of different policies. Mandatory death records exist, but critical contextual data is often voluntary, delayed, or inconsistent across states. This patchwork makes it difficult for lawmakers, law enforcement, researchers, and the public to identify what actually works to reduce violence while respecting constitutional rights. We therefore ask Congress to: Provide stable, adequate funding for firearm-injury research at the CDC, NIH, and National Institute of Justice. Mandate consistent, timely national reporting of detailed firearms data (building on the NORC Blueprint for a U.S. Firearms Data Infrastructure and full implementation of NIBRS and NVDRS). Create a publicly accessible national nonfatal gunshot wound database. Improve data quality, timeliness, and accessibility so that evidence-based decisions can be made at the federal, state, and local levels. This is not about any specific gun law. It is about replacing guesswork and political rhetoric with transparent, high-quality facts that all sides can trust. Hunters, gun owners, law enforcement, public health professionals, and parents all deserve better information. Better data saves lives and protects rights. Please support legislation that builds a modern, comprehensive national firearms data infrastructure.
