Support Michigan's right to repair bills for renters' rights

To: Sen. Outman, Gov. Whitmer, Rep. Posthumus

From: A constituent in Rockford, MI

June 13

The right to repair bills advancing in the Michigan Senate are crucial steps towards empowering renters and ensuring safe, quality housing for all. The current lack of clear timelines for landlords to address hazardous conditions, mold, pests, and other defects leaves tenants vulnerable, compromising their health and well-being. By establishing firm deadlines and allowing renters to make necessary repairs themselves if timelines are not met, these bills would hold landlords accountable and safeguard renters' rights. Furthermore, the 90-day notice requirement for rent increases is a reasonable measure that provides tenants with ample time to plan and make informed decisions about their living situations. The ability to receive security deposits electronically is also a welcome modernization that streamlines the process. While concerns from property owners are understandable, the realities faced by renters cannot be ignored. Safe, habitable housing should be a fundamental right, not a privilege. These bills strike a fair balance by allowing landlords reasonable timeframes while empowering tenants to take action when those deadlines are not met. A comprehensive approach to housing reform is necessary to address the rising crisis of affordability and access in Michigan. The right to repair bills represent a positive step forward in ensuring renters have recourse when their living conditions are substandard. I urge you to support this legislation and prioritize the well-being of Michigan's renters.
