ICE is not law enforcement. It is a paramilitary secret police. No warrants. No due process. No courts. No lawyers. No appeals. People vanish in the night, not because they broke the law, but because the law no longer means anything. The knock on the door is the sentence. Now, a leaked memo, from ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons, shows the Department of Homeland Security instructing ICE ‘officers’ to force their way into peoples' houses without a proper judicial warrant signed by a judge. Further, ICE not allowing ‘officers’ to have unsupervised copies of ICE policies, or to take any notes, is an admission that ICE knows its policies are illegal. If ICE doesn’t want to be called Gestapo, they shouldn’t conduct themselves like the Gestapo. Would they prefer ‘Stasi?’ ‘NKVD?’ This is a blatant violation of the Fourth Amendment, and shows ICE’s complete contempt for our Constitution and the rule of law. My wife and I urge you to use your considerable power as a member of Congress to rein in ICE and their unnecessarily-violent tactics. Return it to border-securing role for which it was created.
