I urge you to launch a full congressional investigation into ICE’s arrest practices, internal directives, and widespread violations of due process. Investigations across multiple regions show ICE detaining U.S. citizens, arresting lawful green card and visa holders, and targeting immigrants who have no criminal history. In city enforcement sweeps, more than two-thirds of the people arrested had no criminal record at all. There are also documented cases of citizens held for days in ICE custody after officers refused to review valid identification. Families have reported seeing loved ones dragged or restrained despite presenting passports, birth certificates, and other documents that should have ended the encounter immediately. ICE has also carried out courthouse arrests that undermine the justice process. Individuals who appeared for hearings because they were instructed to do so by the courts were taken into custody at the courthouse doors. Legal organizations have filed lawsuits stating that these actions violated established legal norms and placed entire communities at risk. High-profile ICE raids have raised further concerns. In Chicago, a major operation was promoted as a security success, yet no criminal charges resulted once the details were reviewed. Additional reports documented increasingly aggressive tactics by ICE officers in several neighborhoods. This is not the immigration crackdown that President Trump ran on. He said they would deport undocumented immigrants who are criminals, not every immigrant and certainly not US citizens. These patterns reflect systemic failures inside ICE and demand immediate congressional oversight. I urge you to conduct a full investigation into these arrest practices, the internal policies that produced them, and the steps necessary to prevent further violations.
