Protect Social Security from workforce cuts and service disruptions.

To: Rep. Crane, Sen. Gallego, Sen. Kelly

The Social Security Administration's plan to cut around 7,000 jobs, roughly 12% of its workforce, raises grave concerns about the agency's ability to provide vital services to millions of Americans who rely on Social Security benefits. While President Trump had repeatedly promised not to touch Social Security benefits, these deep staffing cuts proposed by his administration threaten to significantly undermine the agency's operations and customer service capabilities. The proposed reductions come at a time when the number of Social Security beneficiaries is at an all-time high, with over 73 million people receiving monthly payments. Cutting such a substantial portion of the agency's staff will inevitably strain its capacity to process claims, respond to inquiries, and ensure the timely delivery of benefits to those who have paid into the system throughout their working lives. Furthermore, the consolidation of regional offices and the potential elimination of entire organizations within the SSA raise questions about the agency's ability to effectively serve diverse communities across the nation. These sweeping changes could create unnecessary barriers for vulnerable populations, such as the elderly and individuals with disabilities, who rely heavily on accessible and personalized support from the SSA. It is imperative that Congress intervenes to prevent these misguided cuts from compromising the integrity of the Social Security system. Legislators must prioritize the well-being of their constituents and ensure that the SSA remains adequately staffed and funded to fulfill its critical mission. The promised benefits that millions of Americans have earned through their hard work and contributions must be safeguarded, and the agency's ability to deliver them efficiently and effectively must be protected.
