An Open Letter

To: Sen. Rolison, Assembly Member Levenberg, Gov. Hochul

From: A constituent in Cold Spring, NY

February 5

I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to express my strong opposition to any policies or actions that would allow U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to enter New York schools. Our state has long been a beacon of inclusivity, and it is essential that we protect all students, regardless of their immigration status, from the threat of deportation or detention in their learning environment. Schools should be safe spaces where children can focus on their education, free from fear of government interference or intimidation. Allowing ICE agents into schools undermines the trust between immigrant communities and the institutions that are meant to serve and protect them. Such policies would not only traumatize children but also place an undue burden on teachers, administrators, and staff who are trying to provide a safe, supportive learning environment. New York’s commitment to being a sanctuary state is a vital aspect of our values. We must continue to uphold that by ensuring that all students—regardless of their background—can attend school without fear of being separated from their families. I urge you to take a firm stance against ICE presence in New York schools and work toward policies that ensure our educational spaces remain welcoming and inclusive for all. Thank you for your attention to this important matter. I look forward to your leadership in defending the rights and safety of our children.
