An Open Letter

Deny the Enbridge Line 5 Tunnel Permits Following the Michigan Supreme Court’s critical decision, I write to urge your administration and the Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) to permanently revoke permits for Enbridge’s Line 5 tunnel project. The high court made it abundantly clear that the state must thoroughly analyze the environmental damages and viable alternatives before handing our waters over to a foreign corporation. As Tribal leaders like Bay Mills Indian Community President Whitney Gravelle have rightfully emphasized, granting permits to disturb wetlands and delicate habitats risks the sacred cultural heritage, fisheries, and drinking water relied on by millions of Michiganders. With experts confirming that regional energy needs can be safely transitioned without severe price spikes, continuing to endorse a multi-year tunnel project only prolongs unnecessary risk to our Great Lakes. Furthermore, recent accidents—such as the Wisconsin pipeline leak—serve as a sharp reminder that relying on fossil fuel infrastructure under our waters is an unacceptable threat. Please fulfill your duty to uphold the public trust. Stand with Tribal Nations, local businesses, and Michigan residents by formally denying and rescinding all environmental permits for Line 5.
