I’m writing about HOUSE BILL No. 2426, another bill that intends to “protect women.” Policing our bodies, policing bathrooms, and forcing people to list their biological sex at birth on their identification paperwork causes harm. It causes harm to an already vulnerable population. Many people who do not fit in the “black and white boxes” of their “biological sex” already deal with too much discrimination and focus from our government. They are not causing harm. But policies like this do cause harm. When someone from a vulnerable situation is then forced to choose a bathroom based on their “biological sex” they are then put into a dangerous situation where they do not often look like the people in the bathroom they are now “forced” to use. This can increase discrimination and confusion, unnecessarily so! Not only that, I find it absurd that our legislators think this is a good use of their time. If this is something they really must focus on, then please, be inclusive with how you proceed and require single stall unisex facilities, with FULL DOORS. Better yet, please stop conflating click-bait politics with actual necessary and good works that can be furthered.
