Writing from Altoona to ask that you please do all that you can to stop the construction of the proposed arch in D.C., the Caesar’s Palace White House ballroom , and the erosion of review and protection powers in section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. The latter protects historic places and landscapes across the country. The administration proposes changes that will erode that process down to a rubber stamp instead of the methodical expert and public process it currently is. Without this we could end up with poorly planned vanity projects across the country. In the specific example of the arch, the ostentatious sky scrapper height eyesore would impact 35 other landmarks. Perhaps most importantly it would block the hallowed view from the Lincoln Memorial to Arlington National Cemetery. Of course the price tag is also appalling at a time of killer cuts to other programs at the NEH, NPS, and more. Projects like this belong in Las Vegas or Disney World, not Washington, D.C.
