I am writing to express my strong opposition to the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, currently under consideration in Congress. While the bill purports to enhance election security, it poses significant risks to the fundamental right to vote for millions of eligible Americans, particularly women, rural residents, and marginalized communities.
The SAVE Act mandates that individuals provide documentary proof of U.S. citizenship—such as a passport or birth certificate—when registering to vote or updating their registration. This requirement is especially burdensome for married women who have changed their last names, as their current identification may not match their birth certificates. An estimated 69 million women could be affected by this provision .
Furthermore, the bill would eliminate or severely restrict online and mail-in voter registration, methods that have been widely used and accessible to many citizens. This could disenfranchise individuals in rural areas, seniors, students, and those with disabilities .
The necessity of such stringent measures is questionable, as studies have shown that instances of noncitizen voting are exceedingly rare. Moreover, existing laws already prohibit noncitizen voting and impose penalties for violations .
I urge you to consider the potential negative impact of the SAVE Act on voter participation and to vote against its passage. Protecting the integrity of our elections should not come at the expense of disenfranchising eligible voters.
Thank you for your attention to this critical issue.
