Congress needs to act now to block Trump's diesel deal with Russia and enforce the bipartisan sanctions law he signed just last month. Trump announced a deal with Putin to import millions of tons of Russian diesel while his own envoys were meeting with Ukrainian officials in Miami — a betrayal of our allies in real time. Zelenskyy called it exactly what it is: a smokescreen that lets Russia "kill more, wage war for longer."
The law Trump signed directs his administration to sanction the top importers of Russian oil and gas. Instead, Treasury just issued a six-month license exempting Russian diesel from those very sanctions. Experts say the deal won't even lower prices — the national average is still $6.28 a gallon — because Russia's existing customers will simply compete elsewhere for supply. This is a gift to Putin that undermines U.S. credibility, rewards aggression, and violates the spirit of legislation Congress already passed. Hold the line on sanctions and demand this deal be reversed.
