Bankruptcy Is Not a Crisis — It’s the System Working

Dear Representative, I am writing to oppose any federal intervention, bailout, or preferential treatment for Spirit Airlines as it navigates bankruptcy proceedings. Adam Smith’s theory of the invisible hand holds that free markets, left to operate without interference, allocate resources efficiently through the natural forces of competition, failure, and renewal. That mechanism is not a flaw — it is the feature. When a company fails to deliver value, mismanages capital, or loses competitive footing, the market corrects. Assets are absorbed. Customers find alternatives. A stronger competitor emerges or expands to fill the void. Spirit’s collapse is that process working as intended. Its fleet does not disappear — it gets acquired. Its routes do not vanish — they get absorbed by carriers that can operate them profitably. Its former customers do not stop flying — they shift to competitors who earned their business. What we cannot allow is for government to interrupt that correction by selecting which companies survive. That is not capitalism. That is cronyism. When public resources are deployed to shield private investors and executives from the consequences of their own decisions, we have abandoned the principles of the free market we claim to defend. The risk was theirs. The loss should be too. Chapter 11 exists precisely for this moment. It is a structured, legal, market-consistent process for resolving insolvency. It protects workers where possible, preserves viable assets, and allows the market to determine what survives and what does not — without a politician’s thumb on the scale. I urge you to let that process run its course. Do not intervene. Do not negotiate special terms. Do not authorize funds. The invisible hand is doing its job. Let it. Respectfully,
