Unacceptable Mismanagement at Social Security — Congress Must Act

To: Sen. Hawley, Sen. Schmitt

From: A verified voter in Kansas City, MO

March 17

I am writing to express outrage over the current handling of the Social Security Administration and the continued damage being done to one of the most critical programs in this country. Recent reporting shows that Social Security is now reassigning employees with little to no training to answer phone lines, pulling them away from the jobs they were hired and trained to do. These are not minor adjustments. Employees are being given only hours of preparation before being expected to handle complex public inquiries, a decision that risks worsening backlogs and increasing errors. At the same time, the agency has already lost thousands of employees, including frontline staff responsible for directly assisting the public. Lawmakers have warned that these actions are draining expertise from field offices, increasing delays, and pushing Social Security’s already strained customer service systems toward crisis. This is unacceptable. Social Security is not optional government spending. It is an earned benefit that nearly 75 million Americans depend on to survive. Undermining its operations through staffing cuts and reckless reassignments puts retirees, disabled individuals, and survivors at real risk. These decisions are already having serious consequences • Longer wait times for Americans trying to access their benefits • Growing backlogs and delays in processing claims • Increased likelihood of errors due to undertrained staff • Loss of experienced employees and institutional knowledge • Reduced access to in person assistance for vulnerable populations This is not efficiency. This is mismanagement. Forcing untrained employees onto phone lines while stripping resources from field offices does not solve problems. It creates them. It shifts the burden onto workers and ultimately harms the very people Social Security is supposed to serve. The Social Security Administration should be fully funded and properly staffed to meet the needs of the American public. Instead, it is being weakened at a time when demand is increasing. Congress has a duty to intervene. I urge you to • Publicly speak out against these harmful staffing decisions • Demand full transparency and accountability from agency leadership • Advocate for full funding and proper staffing of the Social Security Administration • Protect federal employees who are being forced into unsustainable and ineffective working conditions Silence on this issue is not acceptable. The people who rely on Social Security cannot afford delays, confusion, or failure. You were elected to represent your constituents. Now is the time to stand up and do so.
