Protecting LGBTQ+ Rights in Oklahoma and Nationwide
To: Rep. Hern, Sen. Mullin, Sen. Lankford
From: A constituent in Tulsa, OK
May 9
I am reaching out as a concerned citizen and advocate for the LGBTQ+ community in Oklahoma. Across the country, we have seen an alarming rise in legislative efforts aimed at restricting the rights and freedoms of LGBTQ+ individuals. Here in Oklahoma, lawmakers have introduced and passed numerous bills that directly harm our community, from restrictions on gender-affirming healthcare to policies that discriminate against transgender and nonbinary individuals. The Oklahoma legislature has considered over 50 anti-LGBTQ bills this session, many of which seek to undermine the dignity and protections of marginalized communities. House Bill 1449, for example, falsely claims to define "women’s rights" while erasing transgender rights. Additionally, Senate Bill 129 continues to push harmful restrictions on gender-affirming care despite widespread opposition from medical professionals and human rights organizations. These policies not only fail to represent the principles of equality and fairness, but they actively contribute to an environment where LGBTQ+ individuals face increased discrimination, exclusion, and violence. The Human Rights Campaign reports that 2023 saw the highest number of anti-LGBTQ bills in U.S. history, and the American Civil Liberties Union continues to track hundreds of such proposals nationwide. As my elected representative in the United States Congress, you have the power to ensure that our nation stands for dignity, equality, and human rights. I urge you to take action by: 1. **Publicly opposing any efforts to restrict LGBTQ+ rights at the federal level.** 2. **Supporting inclusive policies that ensure protections for all Americans, including LGBTQ+ individuals.** 3. **Using your platform to affirm the rights and dignity of LGBTQ+ constituents in Oklahoma and across the nation.** Oklahoma should be a place where all individuals, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation, can live without fear of discrimination. I ask that you stand up and speak out for your LGBTQ+ constituents and fight for policies that reflect fairness, compassion, and inclusion. Thank you for your time and your commitment to justice. I look forward to your response and to seeing meaningful action on behalf of the LGBTQ+ community.
