End the militarization of ICE and the violence in our neighborhoods

To: Sen. Ricketts, Rep. Flood, Sen. Fischer

From: A constituent in Papillion, NE

January 24

The events of the last three weeks demonstrate that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is no longer acting as a standard law enforcement agency, but as a paramilitary force operating with lethal impunity in American neighborhoods. The statistics from this month alone are staggering: • January 6, 2026: The administration deployed a surge of 2,000 agents to Minneapolis, fundamentally altering the safety of our streets. • January 7, 2026: ICE agent Jonathan Ross shot and killed 37-year-old Renée Good, a U.S. citizen and mother, while she was driving away from a confrontation. • Ongoing Violence: There have been three ICE-involved shootings in the last 18 days. As of today, January 24, at least six people have died in ICE custody this year, including the homicide of Geraldo Lunas Campos in El Paso. In just 24 days, we have seen nine shooting incidents since late 2025 and eight total deaths. This is not "immigration enforcement"; it is a domestic invasion. Historian Heather Cox Richardson recently noted: “The correct response to Dachau was not better training for the guards.” Similarly, we cannot "train" our way out of an agency that uses masked agents to smash car windows, perform warrantless home raids, and deploy chemical irritants against peaceful observers. ICE’s current budget ($28.7 billion), military-grade weaponry, and aggressive tactics now mirror those of a domestic army. I am calling on you to take the following immediate actions: 1. Cease All Funding Increases: Oppose the FY2026 DHS Funding Bill that seeks to add hundreds of millions to ICE’s enforcement and detention budgets. 2. Mandate External Oversight: Support legislation that strips ICE of "absolute immunity" and subjects agents to the same constitutional standards as local police. 3. Demand an Independent Investigation: Call for a Department of Justice investigation into the killing of Renée Good and the surge of custody deaths. Which city will be "invaded" next? How many more Americans must die before Congress reclaims its authority? I look forward to hearing your specific plan to rein in this agency and protect the constitutional rights of all residents.
