Preserve Department of Education: Safeguard Education Access

To: Rep. Ciscomani, Sen. Kelly, Sen. Gallego

From: A constituent in Tucson, AZ

April 17

The proposal to abolish the Department of Education through S. 1402 is concerning and would have severe negative consequences for our nation's education system. The Department of Education plays a crucial role in promoting equal access to quality education, enforcing civil rights laws in schools, distributing federal financial aid for students, and supporting educational research and innovation. Dismantling this agency would jeopardize these vital functions and undermine efforts to provide every child with opportunities for academic success. Furthermore, eliminating the Department of Education would shift a significant financial burden onto states and localities, many of which already face budget constraints. This could exacerbate disparities in educational resources and outcomes across different communities. Education is a fundamental right and a primary driver of social mobility and economic prosperity. Abolishing the federal agency responsible for upholding this right would be a serious setback for our society. I strongly urge you to oppose S. 1402 and any legislation aimed at eliminating the Department of Education. The department serves an indispensable purpose, and its abolition would have far-reaching negative ramifications for the future of our nation's youth and the overall well-being of our country.
