Venezuela
To: Sen. Young, Sen. Banks, Rep. Spartz
From: A constituent in Yorktown, IN
January 5
I am extremely concerned about the recent United States military strikes on Venezuela and the capture and removal of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife. This dramatic escalation of military force represents an astonishing use of American power with profound implications for international law, regional stability, and U.S. global leadership. President Trump has publicly stated that U.S. forces conducted large-scale strikes in Caracas and that Maduro and his wife were subsequently flown out of Venezuela. There can be no justice when the President pardons a known drug trafficker, the Honduran President, and then uses Narco Terrorism as an excuse to overthrow Venezuela. I am not a fan of Maduro by any means, but the US involvement is about Trump's personal preferences versus upholding the integrity of the United States. Congress cannot allow unchecked enrichment and continued constitutional and legal violations. These strikes are violations of Venezuelan sovereignty and international law. The US does not have a good track record on matters of "invasion" for oil. And, I am sick of the political gaslighting. The illegal violation of a country's sovereignty places American service members, civilians abroad, and the country at grave risk while undermining global norms the United States claims to uphold. As your constituent and an American, I strongly urge you to take the following actions: 1. Strongly condemn the military strikes against a sovereign nation unless the use of force has been explicitly authorized by Congress, is truly defensive in nature, or is grounded in well-established international legal principles. 2. Support full congressional oversight of any and all military actions involving Venezuela, including hearings, classified briefings, and a clear statement of the legal basis for this operation. Personally, the abject violation of multiple laws over the course of this term by the President should end in impeachment or enactment of the 25th Amendment. This latest authoritarian decision to use the military to attack a sovereign nation is an abject abuse of power. This crisis carries risks of broader regional conflict, serious humanitarian consequences, and long-term damage to the credibility of the United States abroad. I strongly urge you to stand for the rule of law, restraint in the use of force, and robust congressional oversight of American military actions. Thank you for taking this matter very seriously.
