am writing to strongly urge you to support Senator Tim Kaine’s War Powers Resolution. As your constituent, I believe it is critical that Congress fully exercise its constitutional authority when it comes to matters of war and the deployment of U.S. forces abroad.
The Constitution clearly grants Congress — not the executive branch — the sole power to declare war. In recent decades, however, we have seen a troubling pattern of military engagements authorized unilaterally by successive administrations without sufficient consultation or approval from the legislative branch. This not only undermines the balance of powers but places our service members in harm's way without full public debate or accountability.
Senator Kaine’s resolution is a thoughtful, bipartisan effort to reassert congressional responsibility and oversight over decisions of war and peace. It does not restrict the President’s ability to respond to immediate threats but ensures that any sustained military action receives proper congressional debate and authorization, as the Constitution intends.
Preserving this balance of power is not a partisan issue — it is a fundamental principle of our democracy and a safeguard against the unintended consequences of unchecked military intervention. Supporting this resolution affirms your commitment to transparency, accountability, and the rule of law.
I respectfully ask that you co-sponsor and vote in favor of Senator Kaine’s War Powers Resolution. Your leadership on this matter will help protect the lives of our service members, uphold constitutional checks and balances, and ensure that any decision to enter conflict reflects the collective will of the American people.
Thank you for your attention to this critical issue. I look forward to seeing your support for restoring proper Congressional oversight of war powers.
