Urge Congress to Exercise Constitutional Authority on Greenland Policy

To: Sen. Murray, Sen. Cantwell, Rep. DelBene

I am writing to urge you to exercise your constitutional authority to prevent the administration from pursuing military action or forced acquisition of Greenland. This is not a partisan issue but a matter of defending American interests and the rule of law. President Trump recently sent a letter to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre stating that because Norway did not award him the Nobel Peace Prize, he no longer feels obligated to think purely of peace and can focus on what is good for the United States. He concluded that "The World is not secure unless we have Complete and Total Control of Greenland." This letter was forwarded by the White House National Security Council to ambassadors, indicating serious intent. The justifications in this letter are factually incorrect. Greenland has been Danish territory for centuries, with residents who are Danish citizens voting in Danish elections. Multiple written documents establish Danish sovereignty, including some signed by the United States. The Norwegian Nobel Committee, not the Norwegian government, determines the Nobel Peace Prize winner. Yet this grievance is being used to justify potential military action against a NATO ally. Any attempt to occupy Greenland would require forcing citizens of a treaty ally to become American against their will. Financial markets are already anticipating damaging trade wars. Years of careful diplomacy and billions of dollars in trade with European allies, India, South Korea, Japan, and Australia are at risk. Congress has constitutional powers over military action, appropriations, and foreign commerce. I urge you to use these powers immediately to block any action toward forced acquisition of Greenland. This requires public statements, legislative action, and coordination with colleagues to establish clear boundaries. The permanent damage to American interests and alliances demands that Congress fulfill its constitutional role as a check on executive power.
