Please vote no on S9226 (or it's Assembly equivalent once it's assigned a same-as bill #). This bill would allow darker tint on vehicles, changing the law from 70% light transmittance to 50% light transmissitance.
Look, I'm a car guy, I like cars, not so much car dependent infrastructure, but I like cars themselves and think they can look good with dark window tint. It can also keep your car a lot cooler in the summer.
However, I am also a pedestrian. If I cannot see a driver, I have no idea if they can see me. Every time I go for a walk I am nearly hit by a motorist who either does not see me or does not care for my wellbeing, or both. I've even stopped biking entirely, after being an avid cyclist for years, because I simply no longer feel safe on our roads.
New ceramic tint technology can have the same cooling results as dark window tint with only 70% or more light transmittance. At 70% I can still clearly see motorists and they can clearly see me, all while their interior stays cool from the hot summer sun. I'm looking into getting it done on my vehicle this summer, at 70% light transmittance, of course.
I think this bill would be a step backward for pedestrian safety and would move us further from our goals of Vision Zero. Please vote no on S9226.
