President Trump’s directive to investigate ActBlue, the primary fundraising platform for Democratic candidates, is a blatant misuse of executive power aimed at undermining political opposition. This action, which conspicuously excludes the Republican counterpart WinRed, exemplifies selective enforcement and threatens the integrity of our democratic processes (AP News, April 2025).
Legal scholars warn that politicizing the Justice Department erodes the foundational principle of impartial justice. Steve Levitsky, a Harvard political scientist and coauthor of “How Democracies Die,” notes that using state power to target political adversaries is characteristic of authoritarian regimes (AP News, April 2025). Similarly, Brendan Nyhan from Dartmouth emphasizes that undermining fair political competition is a dangerous breach of democratic norms (AP News, April 2025).
ActBlue has empowered millions of Americans to participate in politics through small-dollar donations. Targeting a platform that encourages civic engagement not only suppresses political speech but also sets a dangerous precedent for using government to stifle dissent (Politico, April 2025).
I urge you to publicly condemn this abuse of power and support legislation that reinforces the independence of political participation and safeguards the justice system from partisan attacks. Democracy depends on protecting the rights of all Americans, not just those in power.
