Oppose the SAVE Act

To: Sen. Baldwin, Sen. Johnson

From: A verified voter in Madison, WI

February 13

I am writing as a constituent to urge you to oppose the SAVE Act. While the stated goal of protecting election integrity is important, the SAVE Act would create unnecessary and harmful barriers to voting for eligible American citizens. Requiring specific documentary proof of citizenship to register or remain registered to vote risks disenfranchising millions of lawful voters, including seniors, married women whose names have changed, rural residents, low-income voters, and people who do not have ready access to passports or birth certificates. There is no evidence of widespread non-citizen voting in federal elections that would justify such sweeping restrictions. Existing federal and state laws already prohibit non-citizens from voting, and states have mechanisms in place to maintain accurate voter rolls. The SAVE Act would duplicate these systems while introducing confusion, administrative burden, and the real possibility of eligible voters being wrongly removed or prevented from participating. Voting is a fundamental constitutional right and the cornerstone of our democracy. Any changes to election law should expand access and participation, not erect new obstacles for eligible voters exercising their rights in good faith. I urge you to reject the SAVE Act and instead support policies that strengthen election security while protecting and expanding access to the ballot for all eligible Americans.
