Oppose the SAVE America Act and Protect Voting Rights

To: Rep. Elfreth, Sen. Alsobrooks, Sen. Van Hollen

From: A constituent in Arnold, MD

February 23

I am writing to urge you to vote against the SAVE America Act, which passed the House 218-213 and now requires 60 votes in the Senate. This bill would create unprecedented barriers to voting under the guise of election security, disproportionately harming eligible American citizens. Over 20 million Americans lack ready access to proof of citizenship documents like birth certificates or passports. The SAVE Act would require these documents to register to vote, effectively disenfranchising millions. Married women who changed their surnames face particular hardship, now required to sign attestations swearing to former names even for online and mail registration, something only 3 states currently require. Elderly voters without driver's licenses, students whose IDs are not accepted, and tribal members whose IDs often lack required expiration dates would all face new obstacles. The bill mandates frequent voter roll purges, allowing states to remove registered voters simply for failing to vote in recent elections. It also requires every state to submit voter lists to the Department of Homeland Security, raising serious concerns about data handling and privacy. Perhaps most troubling, it creates a private right of action allowing individuals to sue election officials they believe registered non-citizens, opening the door to widespread harassment and intimidation of election workers. Republicans currently have 50 votes but need 60 to overcome the filibuster. President Trump is pressuring Senate Republicans to eliminate the filibuster entirely to pass this bill with just 51 votes. This would fundamentally alter Senate procedures to advance voter suppression. I urge you to vote no on the SAVE America Act and to oppose any effort to eliminate the filibuster for this purpose. Rather than restricting access to the ballot, I ask that you support measures protecting election officials and voters from intimidation and ensuring all eligible citizens can exercise their constitutional right to vote.
